Repayments come straight out of your pay through PAYE, like tax. They're based on what you earn in each pay period, so a month with overtime or a bonus can mean a bigger repayment that month.
Good to know
- If you have a postgraduate loan as well, you pay both: 9% over your plan threshold and 6% over £21,000.
- Salary sacrifice reduces the pay your repayments are based on. Pension contributions taken before tax don't.
- Plan 2 loans are written off 30 years after you were first due to repay, and Plan 5 after 40 years.
